Can’t get eclipse glasses? Other safe ways to view the eclipse!

With only a little over a week until the solar eclipse, most places that sell safe eclipse glasses are sold out. It’s important to note that the only time it’s safe to view the eclipse without eye protection is in its total phase. Here on Delmarva, we’ll see approximately an 80% eclipse. The good news is that there are other ways to indirectly view the eclipse, and you can make them yourself!

One of the most common eclipse viewers is the cereal box viewer, made from simple household items. Once finished, you can see a small image of the sun projected onto the bottom of the cereal box. This eliminates the need to look directly at the eclipse, by looking at a projection!

Another easy to make eclipse viewer is the pinhole viewer, which works in a similar way as the cereal box viewer. You can see a projection of the eclipse on one side of the tube.
