Talbot Co. Public Schools Launch Weapons Detection System

(EASTON, Md) – Football season kicks off at Easton High School Friday with a debut specifically for the community.
After months of planning, Talbot County Public Schools have launched these new weapons detections systems for home Easton High football games.
And they’re looking to make home football games safe for everyone watching.
The Pilot Program was put into action this past spring by the school system.
More than half a year later they’re excited to debut it through a couple of different sports across the county.
“We had a workgroup that we had brought together that included members of the, Talbot County Public School System, members of the Talbot County Sheriff’s Office who we work with closely. And we began looking at different vendors, doing research around, you know, what other schools have implemented,” says TCPS School Safety and Security Coordinator, Sherry Spurry.
The school system says thankfully, there’s been no tragedy to spur this. They just want to get ahead of the risks for everyone’s safety.
And we got a run through of how it’s going to work in Easton.
Sherry tells WMDT, “This definitely doesn’t, replace anything with law enforcement as part of our process. It’s actually a two part screening. So first, our guests are asked to walk through the lane. If they do alert, there is a secondary wanding area, where we will identify what has, triggered the alert.””
We also asked Sherry about one other detail regarding this new system. Could we potentially see this inside Talbot County schools in the future?
She says, “You know, we may have conversations about ‘is this something that we want to expand further? Or are there other options that we could consider?”
Talbot County Public Schools are going to be monitoring aspects from how quickly they can get people through, and the effectiveness of the system before receiving a survey from the Maryland Center for Safe Schools in December to make a further decision about the system.
