Maryland fights towards herd immunity, a look at how counties are measuring up

MARYLAND.- No Arm Left Behind. That’s Maryland Governor Larry Hogan’s approach as the state fights its way toward herd immunity.

According to the Maryland Department of Health, half of Marylanders have had at least one dose with 43% fully vaccinated.

Although this is so, health officials say Marylanders shouldn’t back down now. “We really won’t stop pushing that message until we’ve vaccinated the overwhelming majority of Marylanders who can get a vaccine,” said Maryland Department of Health Dr. Cliff Mitchell

Worcester County isn’t far behind from the state’s overall numbers with 48.5% of the population receiving at least one dose. The Health Department says that their focus has been on being present and accessible in the community,  providing support anyway they can. “There’s so many hands on deck and we’re very big on it takes a village to meet any public health goal in Worcester County,” said Worcester County Health Department’s Travis Brown.

Brown says supply and demand are leveling out now which is some good news, they want to remind Marylanders that as the summer travel approaches  that being vaccinated is more important than ever. “We are big on making sure that everyone gets that perfect beach and summer vibe going but the best way to do that because COVID isn’t done yet is to make sure your getting vaccinated and that you’re encouraging people around you to get vaccinated,” said Brown.

Although some are still hesitant to get the vaccine, Brown says health officials are trying to combat this with accessibility and getting the information out on the benefits of being vaccinated. “When you get your vaccine you’re doing your part, not just to protect yourself but your family. Your are protecting any who can’t get the vaccine for whatever reasons and its just the best thing to do to fight COVID and I think we’re all so sick of COVID that we would love to kick its butt,” said brown.

The Maryland Department of Health says mobile vaccination sites will continue to play a big role in getting more Marylanders vaccinated.

Talbot County is right above Worcester with 49% of individuals vaccinated.
