The Delaware Department of Transportation (Del DOT) says that for the safety of drivers, a breach in the dunes near Conquest Road has happened and S.R. 1 northbound and southbound (Cullen Bridge over Indian River Inlet) is closed between Dewey Beach and Bethany Beach on Tuesday morning.

Northbound detour from Bethany follows Route 26 westbound to US 113 northbound onto Route 24 eastbound and will return to SR 1. The detour southbound leaves SR 1 at Route 24 in Rehoboth Beach and heads westbound onto US 113 southbound to Route 26 eastbound and back to SR 1.

This will be in effect until the water has receded to a safe travel level. Drivers are advised to drive with caution on roads, pay attention to barricades and do not drive through standing water. If you see a flooded roadway ahead, officials say, turn around and take an alternate route to your destination.

Del DOT'S Twitter also shows that River Road is closed between Oak Orchard Road and Layton Davis Road, Route 1 northbound between Fred Hudson Road and Dewey Beach is closed, and Route 1 between Route 26 and Dewey Beach is closed.

Route 1 southbound between Collins street and Irib and Brenford road between US 13 and Willow Wood Drive, the westbound lane is closed. All the closures are due to water on the roadway.
