Crisfield hosts homebuyer seminar as part of its starter homes program

Salisbury, Md. – In Crisfield, efforts are taking shape to bring more affordable housing.

Officials in Crisfield confirmed that a new home built on 329 Tyler St. is complete and ready for move-in. Project Manager Jennifer Floyd said the home is part of the city’s low-income housing initiative, which builds starter homes under $200,000 for city residents. She said the initiative is through funding from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development’s Community Legacy Program.

“I’m excited for I’m excited for Crisfield. I’m excited for the residents,” Floyd said. “Because home ownership is important for some people. And so, to think that you can now meet that, if that’s a dream of yours. And now your dream is able to come true with home ownership.”

Floyd said, if all goes well, they will have a resident moving in the 329 Tyler St. house by this fall. She said the city is beginning the process of starting on another house on Laird Street, and there will be six more homes after that.

“And then we’re in the process of starting on the next house on Laird Street, and then we have six more homes after that,” she said.

Floyd also added that the city will host a home buyer seminar and an open house.

“I’m going to bring residents over to this house so that they can come in and so that they can feel it and smell it,” Floyd said. “And it smells like a new home and it’s beautiful on the inside. And so that they can get an idea for the spacing of the type of home that they can get.”

Floyd says the seminar will focus on discussing the Maryland Mortgage Program, which is a program Floyd says helps people with down payments.

She said though the program requires residents to have a certain credit score, she encourages people to apply for the homes being built so that, with time, they can improve their credit score.

“Buying a house is scary for anybody. We all know if you went through the process, it can be a little scary,” she said. “But I will be here to hold their hands and answer their questions and walk them through the process. And so they won’t have to do it alone. And then we’ll celebrate once they get the keys in their hand.”

The seminar and open house will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at the Corbin Library on Saturday, July 18.
