Salisbury, Md. – Law enforcement agencies continue initiative to help out both police officers and people with intellectual disabilities.
At Wor-Wic Community College, various Maryland law enforcement agencies are working with organization pathfinders for autism to learn best practices for interacting with those who have developmental or intellectual disabilities.
“People with intellectual disabilities, we might not be able to tell on the surface that they have a disability, and sometimes it’s hard for them to communicate with us. Not only on the surface, but also sometimes our auditory, sirens and lights can be harsh for them.” says Trooper First Class Lee Ramsay of Maryland State Police.
The goal is to help drivers with disabilities become more familiar and comfortable when stopped by police. Officers say they are glad to educate not only the public but themselves about these interactions.
