Delmarva Power prepares for severe storms across Delmarva region

SALISBURY, Md. — Delmarva Power says it is preparing for the possibility of severe thunderstorms expected to impact parts of the Delmarva Peninsula on Monday, with forecasts calling for damaging winds, lightning and the potential for tornadoes.

The utility said it is increasing staffing and monitoring weather conditions as storms capable of producing wind gusts up to 65 mph move through the region. Such conditions could damage the electrical grid and cause power outages.

“We’re closely monitoring the forecast and have taken steps to ensure our crews, equipment and support teams are ready to respond if severe weather impacts our system,” said Rodney Oddoye, senior vice president and chief operating officer of Pepco Holdings, which includes Delmarva Power.

Oddoye said the company’s priority during outages is restoring service safely and as quickly as possible.

The company is also urging customers to prepare ahead of the storm by signing up for outage alerts, downloading the utility’s mobile app and assembling emergency supplies.

Officials recommend residents prepare an emergency storm kit that includes a battery-powered radio, flashlight, first-aid kit, extra batteries, medications and a list of important phone numbers. Customers should also keep enough bottled water and nonperishable food on hand to last at least 72 hours.

Delmarva Power advises residents to stay away from downed power lines and report them immediately.

Delmarva Power is a subsidiary of Exelon and provides electricity to about 561,400 customers in Delaware and Maryland, as well as natural gas service to roughly 140,000 customers in northern Delaware.
