Cambridge Gears up to Kick Off First Harriet Tubman Summit

(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – Throughout the month of September, local group Alpha Genesis will be honoring the abolition work of Harriet Tubman, highlighting everything she did on the Underground Railroad as well as the impact she’s had even to this day.

The summit is going to be a month-long celebration of Harriet Tubman’s legacy in her home county.

“And the president of Alpha-Genesis. CDC had a vision that she thought that having a large footprint, of Harriet Tubman, during this month. And it is also America 250 would really bring the message and create a lot of impact,” says Summit Program Coordinator, Shawna Kearsley.

And to honor her legacy, Alpha Genesis is inviting people to several events. Including a beautification day across Cambridge, a Day of Resilience, and a Unity Caucus.

Something Cambridge Mayor, Lajan Cephas says will also help connect Dorchester’s historical past to the future.

Mayor Cephas tells WMDT, “The benefit of the Harriet Tubman summit is not just about history. It’s also about assessing where we are today, as well as having conversations as far as where we need to go in the future.”

And they’re hoping people will gain some insight over the month.

Shawna says, “We’re honoring her legacy. But I think the call to action mostly is for each of us as community members to find the spirit of Harriet. And, so we’re very excited to see the impact towards our community members.”

Saturday September 5th is the official kickoff date with a city-wide beautification event in Cambridge.
