Bill West reelected Mayor of Georgetown in close race

GEORGETOWN, Del. – Bill West has won reelection and will serve another term as Mayor of Georgetown.

West won his reelection bid Saturday night in a close race against Councilwoman Angela Townsend by a vote of 379 to 345.

WMDT News spoke with an elated Mayor West following the announcement of the vote count where he said he’s ready to continue to serve the people.

“I feel fantastic,” Mayor West explained. “I’m ready to serve another two years for the people of Georgetown.”

Mayor West acknowledged that the race was close, something he said he anticipated all day as voters took to the polls. He also described what he said was a determination to win by his opponent.

“It was close all day,” Mayor West said. “I could see the determination in their eyes to win, to beat me, to come out and win it with a close vote.”

At the height of contention in recent years in Georgetown has been controversy over the town’s decision back in 2022 to fund thousands of dollars in repairs at the Marvel Museum where a confederate monument and flag can be found on the grounds.

Mayor West spoke out against the council’s decision to fund the museum, specifically calling out Councilwoman Angela Townsend at the time, saying she had “feelings of white power” over her defense of the museum and the confederate flag.

During our interview with Mayor West following his win Saturday night, he told us hate has no place in the Town of Georgetown and that if any council member feels otherwise then maybe it’s time for them to move on.

”We’re gonna do away with it,” Mayor West said. “We’re the county seat, we’re supposed to set the pattern and lead the way. We can’t lead the way when we got things like this going on. We’ve got to get it [hate] out of here. If the council members don’t want to work with me to get it out of here maybe it’s time for them to move on.”
