Heat wave conditions sees programming move indoors for seniors, more pool time for campers
SALISBURY, Md – With temperatures feeling over 100 degrees in Salisbury, and no relief expected till at least Saturday, organizations that cater to both young and old people are making adjustments to keep people hydrated and safe.
“If you are on medications that include diuretics, something that makes you urinate more deeply and which the body of water, bladder, chronic conditions like diabetes or hypertension, blood pressure goes up, those can be very dangerous,” said MAC Center for Aging Director Caroll Zimmerman.
Zimmerman says they’re moving all their outdoor programming indoors for the day plus they’re opening up their center for the general public tomorrow, including an indoor Luhau hour, and indoor physical therapy classes compared to outdoor walks and gardening.
While pets will not be permitted at the center, the Wicomico County Civic Center will also be opening as a cooling center that will accept your four-legged friends.
She tells us her Meals on Wheels crews will also be performing checks for those they serve making sure their AC is working inside their homes.
She tells us her best advice for seniors is to not plan any outdoor strenuous activity when conditions like these persist.
“Don’t be running your errands or bringing in groceries on a day like today,” she said.
Over at Camp Odyseey, campers at the Green Hill Country Club Campus are seeing an increased push to go in the pool and stay hydrated.
“Today they’re going in the pool, days they go in the pool just once and today we are doing that again only because of lifeguards, they come on to be a little later in the day, but this morning we had them play water games to keep cool and we will be offering after camp in the pool as well,” said Green Hill Camp Odyssey Director Sherry Saulitis.
Saulitis tells 47ABC extra water tanks have been placed across the campus, and all non-sports or swimming activities have been moved into indoor venues to give kids and staff a chance to cool off.
“Our activities out in the shaded areas are also doing some of the activities indoors today. So one of the studios is a game studio inside. Instead of being outside for all three studios, we’re going to be at the pool today trying to cool off as much as we can,” she said.
