Foodie Friday: Sweet treats at the Delaware State Fair

HARRINGTON, Del. – If you’ve got a sweet tooth, the Delaware State Fair is the perfect place to conquer those cravings.

This week, the Foodie team shows us why one fan favorite keeps customers returning every year, and how a newcomer is bringing fresh-baked smiles to the First State.

Crafting “Krazy Shakes”

Amy’s Sweet Treats has been satisfying Delaware’s sweet tooth at the state fair for the past 15 years. Owner Henry Mitchell says the concoctions that keep customers returning are their “krazy shakes”.

“‘Hey we’re back!’ They’ll come up to the window with ‘We’re back!’ We get excited about it, because we like to give a good product,” said Mitchell.

Customers can choose from four mouth-watering mixtures. Foodie Friday Host Hannah chose Oreo, and Foodie Photog Mike opted for Reese’s.

Mitchell starts by dipping a 12 ounce cup into melted chocolate, which will harden into a rim; but, not before being dipped in chocolate cookie crumbles. “You’ve kind of got to be quick about it because it hardens pretty quick,” said Mitchell.

Next comes vanilla milk shake, with a syrup of your choice: for Hannah and Mike, it’s fudge and peanut butter, respectively. Next comes more cookie crunch, and an Oreo cookie on Hannah’s shake, and a Reese’s peanut butter cookie for Mike.

“Really thick… Really satisfying.”

“This is definitely a crazy shake. I mean, look at how big this thing is. A lot of chocolate going on here. I chose Oreo because I’m a big Oreo fan. So, let’s just dive right into this,” Hannah said before taking a sip.

“This is the perfect way to beat the heat at the Delaware State Fair. It’s cold, it’s refreshing,” Hannah continued. “It’s a really thick, nice shake, too. It’s really satisfying.”

Mike also reveled in the creamy, delicious milk shake. “The peanut butter and chocolate is nicely balanced. That whipped cream is lovely, too,” he said. “If you need something refreshing, and you’re not too worried about getting messy this is the spot.”

“Just trying to take you back to your grandmother’s kitchen.”

Hannah and Mike wanted to see what other sweet treats were available at the Delaware State Fair; fresh baked chocolate chip cookies, that’s what!

Bruce Blackburn has been on a decades-long journey to craft the perfect cookie. It’s his first time bringing Aunt Betty & Uncle Bubba’s Chocolate Chip Cookies to the Delaware State Fair.

“I made my alterations on them some 30 years ago, baking for friends and family,” Blackburn said. “Everybody loved them, and I thought they were just complimenting me because they got free cookies.”

Now, Blackburn travels the country, sharing the love.

“There’s nothing in this that’s not sitting in somebody’s kitchen right now,” said Blackburn. “We’ll let the boutique shops redesign the cookie. I’m just trying to take you back to your grandmother’s kitchen. If I create a happy memory and put a smile on your face, that’s half of it.”

Fresh Baked Nostalgia

“This is the type of chocolate chip cookie where it kind of just falls apart in your hands because it’s so soft. The chocolate on the inside is still a little bit melty, which is awesome,” Hannah said before their first bite. “Bruce is right; this is just an amazing, simple chocolate chip cookie.”

Mike got a bit nostalgic with his cookie.

“It definitely tastes homemade,” Mike said with a smile. “The texture is just spot on. That’s got a good crumb to it, it’s not too sweet. Reminds me of being a kid. It’s a super chewy, soft cookie.”
