Delaware ACLU’s Amended Lawsuit Against Sussex Correctional Institute
Sussex County, DEL. – Back in December 2021 a lawsuit was filed by two inmates at the Sussex Correctional Institute for “extreme, unprovoked and unnecessary acts of violence” by officers.
Now months later, up to eighteen more inmates have also filed similar complaints against more than thirty officers for “a systemic pattern of abusive and unlawful conduct by correctional officers at SCI.”
Dwyane Bensing, Staff Attorney at the ACLU of Delaware says this new filing will help bring more attention to the pattern of abuse happening there, and, “by adding these additional plaintiffs we can seek remedy for them as well.”
Those remedies could include compensation, punitive damages, attorney fees and more .
Some of the incidents Bensing mentioned, were officers using mace on inmates opened eyes and mouth, kicking beating inmates, and evening denying them food, showers and beds
He went on to say that this is the first step a resolution, but it is a long process, and through compiled evidence and mounting allegations, he believes change will be made.
That change being, “No person should be assaulted by the very person responsible for their health and safety.”
As more of this incident unfolds Bensing believes additional complaints could be filed.
