Salisbury Launches Street Performers Initiative for Downtown Area

SALISBURY, Md. – The City of Salisbury has launched their Street Performers Initiative, an approach that establishes clear guidelines for live artistic performance in public spaces throughout the City.

City leaders say the initiative welcomes a range of artistic expression, including acoustic music, singing, dance, magic, juggling, and other forms of live entertainment. The initiative supports opportunities for individuals with an affinity for the arts to share their work in public spaces while maintaining safe, accessible, and shared use of sidewalks, parks, and plazas.

Salisbury’s Events and Culture Manager Caroline O’Hare says it’s an opportunity to bring fun Downtown while showcasing the talent of local artists.

“We want to create a space for our local artists to be able to promote themselves and share their talent,” O’Hare said in an interview with WMDT. “But also it creates a really fun environment for families to come down, enjoy a meal, see a performance, go shopping — so it also helps our local businesses as well. So it’s a win win for both sides.”

Performers of all backgrounds and experience levels are welcome, and youth performers may participate when accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Performances are permitted daily from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., and must follow guidelines designed to maintain pedestrian flow, accessibility, and shared public use. Performers are expected to maintain clear walkways, avoid blocking entrances, and respect nearby businesses and fellow performers.

Additionally, performers may accept voluntary tips in accordance with City guidelines.

“Our downtown and public spaces play an important role in the City’s overall economic and community vibrancy,” said Mayor Randy Taylor, in a statement. “By supporting street performers, we are strengthening activity in these spaces and enhancing the overall experience for residents and visitors alike.”
