Berlin Receives Increased Grant for Downtown

BERLIN, Md. – The downtown events that bring thousands of visitors to Berlin may have gotten an upgrade, thanks to two grants totalling $50,500.

The main street grant from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development totalled $34,000, along with $16,500 from the Maryland State Arts Council.

According to Ivy Wells, the Berlin Economic and Community Development Director, this years grant was unique.

“[Main St. Grant]  is the most we’ve ever received before so we’re super happy about that.” Said Wells.

In past years, the grants have been used for the petting zoo at the farmers market, entertainers at Oktoberfest and New Years Eve, and additions to downtown such as benches and high top tables.

Frequent visitors of the town, such as Julia Polites and her sister, gave no complaints to the towns events, their only request, is more space to enjoy the festivities.

“They have the farmers market here, and maybe help with parking cause they have so many people come.” Said Polites.

In regards to parking, the town already has a plan set to begin in the fall.

“We will be able to use a petty bike [cab] to transport people from the parking lot which is located on West St. and Tripoli St. and take them downtown for our events.” Said Wells.

The city is now deciding how to allocate these funds, with the decision left to the Main Street Arts & Entertainment Advisory Board, which meets quarterly.
