Talbot County Sheriff’s Office saves youth program, protecting their futures

TALBOT COUNTY, MD.- Through action, words take meaning.

Talbot County Sheriff’s Office put a plan into action to save the Talbot Teen Court program. “We know through studies done all over the county that kids who participate in this type of teen court model that the recidivism rate is very very low. Its less than 11%,” said Sheriff Joe Gamble.

The program serves first-time offenders ages 13-17 for certain non-violent offenses.

It also allows participants to avoid going through the juvenile court system, meaning keeping a clean slate instead of starting a criminal record.

Organizations like Avenues Recovery say they’re excited about the program,  saying addiction can develop at a young age. “Hopefully we can get some integration in quicker for kids who are struggling with criminals behaviors, drug behaviors, family related issues so that they don’t to struggle as they continue to be an adult. I think that important to tackle as soon as you can,” said Clinical Supervisor Kaitlyn Snitchler.

I’m told, these issues have been heightened due to the pandemic with kids being isolated. “I think its easy to find a community of people who are using drugs or getting into criminal behaviors when there’s not a presence of other positive things for them to be apart of,” said Snitchler.

The sheriff’s office says  it also gives police officers the chance to engage with the community, building trust back in law enforcement. “Gives us more time to talk to young people and be involved so they understand our role as well, which we know is really important in todays society,” said Sheriff Gamble.

As kids continue to develop, experts urge parents to take advantage of these resources. “Because if we get the support now for whatever it may be and kind of being humble a little bit to admit that things aren’t perfect at home and there is help. We should use it,” said Snitchler.

Talbot Teen Court is currently seeking student volunteers grades 9-12 for the program. They’re also looking for non-profit community partners as well. If you want to find out more information — visit talbotteencourt.org
