Sturgis Museum to Host 5th Annual Juneteenth Celebration in Pocomoke

POCOMOKE CITY, Md. – The Sturgis One Room School Museum will celebrate Juneteenth with a two-day community event in Pocomoke City featuring live entertainment, food, local vendors and family activities.
The celebration begins Thursday, June 18, with an Open Mic Night at 6:30 p.m. at the Pocomoke Library’s Old Fire Hall location on Fifth Street. Hosted by Sharnell Tull, also known as “Sista Big,” the event will feature singers, poets and spoken-word performers. Organizers said refreshments and door prizes will also be available.
The main Juneteenth celebration will take place Saturday, June 20, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Sturgis One Room School Museum on Willow Street. The free event will include tours of the museum, live performances, music from a DJ, food, bounce houses, face painting and vendors offering items ranging from baked goods and apparel to jewelry and community resources.
Organizers encouraged attendees to also visit businesses in downtown Pocomoke during the event.
Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and is recognized as the nation’s oldest-known celebration marking emancipation.
The Sturgis One Room School Museum is the only African American one-room schoolhouse in Worcester County that retains its original structure and integrity, according to organizers. The event is expected to bring together descendants of former Sturgis students, community members and past and present board members.
Vendor space remains available, and organizers are also seeking volunteers, sponsors and donations to support the event.
Current sponsors include the City of Pocomoke, the Pocomoke Area Chamber of Commerce, Launchpad Arcade, Samaritan Shelter and several local businesses and community organizations.
