Shorebirds’ bats go quiet as Augusta races to ten-run victory

SALISBURY, Md. – The Delmarva Shorebirds fell 11-1 at the hands of the Augusta GreenJackets Wednesday night at Perdue Stadium in Salisbury.

Delmarva started the game on the back foot, with Augusta scoring three runs on Shorebirds starter Keeler Morfe before recording an out in the top of the first inning.

Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the second, Delmarva was able to manufacture some offense with shortstop DJ Layton reaching first on a base-hit bunt before stealing second and advancing to third on a throwing error. With two outs, Layton would race home to score on a wild pitch from Derek Vartanian.

Catcher Juan Ortega followed Layton’s exciting sequence with a triple to center field, his first hit of the season.

Unfortunately for the home team, the second inning intrigue proved to be the only meaningful offense of the night, with the Shorebirds recording eight hits but unable to move any more runners across home plate.

The bulk of Augusta’s offense came from Caden Merritt and Tate Southisene, who both finished with two hits and three RBIs.

Keeler Morfe was charged with the loss for Delmarva, allowing two hits and four earned runs while issuing three walks without recording a out in his first appearance of the season.

Logan Forsythe notched the win for Augusta, giving one hit and fanning three in two innings of work.

The Shorebirds fell to 1-4 with the loss. They’ll regroup for game three of their home stand against the GreenJackets for a Friday night matchup at Perdue Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
