Georgetown Fire Police Officer Critically Injured after Being Struck by Car; DSP Investigating
GEORGETOWN, Del. – The Delaware State Police (DSP) are investigating a pedestrian crash that left a Georgetown Fire Company Police Officer with critical injuries on Monday night.
At approximately 8:36 p.m. on Nov. 3, a 78-year-old fire police officer was providing traffic control at Lewes-Georgetown Highway and Shingle Point Road, while emergency crews were responding to a crash on the highway. At the same time, a Honda Accord was traveling eastbound, approaching Shingle Point Road.
A preliminary investigation by authorities revealed that the officer was standing in the eastbound lane near his vehicle. His emergency blue lights were activated, and he was wearing a high visibility reflective vest, hat, and using a red strobe wand. For reasons still under investigation, the Honda continued eastbound and struck the fire police officer.
The officer was flown to an area hospital with critical injuries.
The driver of the Honda, a 20-year-old man from Georgetown, was not injured.
