Salisbury offers local candidate school to help aspiring politicians

SALISBURY, Md. — A new initiative in Salisbury is helping locals gain the tools and knowledge needed to run for office. The two-day candidate school provides practical steps and advice for anyone interested in serving in local government.

Wicomico County Executive Julie Giordano said the school is open to anyone running for office, whether for executive, school board, county council, or other local positions. The program includes a variety of speakers and detailed information, since “running for office is a beast of a thing,” she said.

PACE at Salisbury University, the Greater Salisbury Committee, and the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce are hosting the school for a second year, focusing on educating and empowering local candidates.

Bill Chambers, president and CEO of the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce, explained the school offers an “A to Z” overview, covering everything from fundraising and campaign finance laws to setting up a committee, recruiting volunteers, and managing a successful campaign. The school also addresses what happens after election day, including filing campaign reports and understanding electioneering laws.

“Speaking from somebody who was in elected office in a different life, you make the mistake of thinking you’ll walk into office and make wholesale changes right away. You’re part of a larger system,” Chambers said.

Panelists with experience in local government will share their insights throughout the school. Giordano, who attended the program in 2021, said it helped her in her own campaign. “The information was really great, and there were a lot of people there,” she said.

The candidate school will be held Oct. 27 and 28 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Salisbury University. Due to limited spots, interested individuals are encouraged to apply soon.
