Cambridge PD Holds First October National Night Out

(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – As the Cambridge Police spent Tuesday afternoon preparing Gerry Boyle Park, Chief Justin Todd says they’ve wanted to move Cambridge’s National Night Out to October for some time.

“But we wanted to do something a little different this year and hopefully get even more participation and also give our other businesses around our community and other organizations a chance to come out in a bigger space that allows more, more people…” says the police chief.

We caught up with Cambridge Mayor, Lajan Cephas before the festivities Tuesday about the Cambridge Police making National Night Out a Fall tradition.

She says, “I’m certain tonight will go well, I’m certain it will always be a tradition. And the good thing about our police department, they do this more than on National Night Out.”

With Cambridge’s National Night Out being in the midst of the current school year, it helps generate buzz in Dorchester schools.

“So right now with it being in October and then, you know, the kids that they’ve just started school, this this gives them something great to talk about the next day of school, about the experience they had national night out with the local police department,” says Mayor Cephas.

And there’s certainly excitement for National Night Out amongst Cambridge law enforcement, as they set up at Gerry Boyle Park, with plenty of community support.

Chief Todd tells us, “…And it just goes to show that different organizations the different businesses, what they’ve donated and the time that they’re giving in the effort are helping the police department put into this.”

Chief Todd says in years past, they’ve had upwards of 800 people when they’ve done National Night Out in August over at the Dorchester County Pool. He’s expecting more than that Tuesday.
