Back to school safety concerns
SALISBURY, Md. — Many local students return to class tomorrow morning.
We spoke with students and parents, some of whom expressed concerns about safety following the shooting that took place last Wednesday in Minneapolis.
Brett, a parent of a 4-year-old and a 6-year-old, shared that his children started school last week. He said he feels they are safe because of local school resource officers and added that he believes the community is united.
“I think, in general, just everybody’s more communicative than before. And, you know, with Facebook, the teachers are really interactive with the parents and everything. So it’s just everybody’s sort of talking and looking out. So I think it’s pretty good,” Brett said. He also shared that he feels reassured knowing how active police are in local communities.
Meanwhile, rising senior Janiya Harris said she’s excited to get back to school. She said she’s got a lot going on between sports, college visits, and finishing up her high school career, and isn’t too worried about staying safe in class.
“At my school, there hasn’t been a lot of issues like that. But honestly, at other schools, I’d probably be worried, like, you know, a lot of threats and stuff like that. Last year, my school had a threat, and I was pretty shaken, but I feel like school administration and stuff like that, they’re prepared,” Harris said.
Harris, who attends Wicomico County Public Schools, says she’s confident in recent security procedure upgrades.
