Dorchester Co. Prepares for Weekend Tidal Flooding

(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – The direct threat of Hurricane Erin may be gone from the Eastern Shore, but in some counties it’s going to cause some problems going into the weekend.

The waters are already looking rough around Long Wharf Park. It’s just one of many low-lying areas in Dorchester County experiencing moderate flooding.
Dorchester County Council member, Mike Detmer tells us, “We’re actively monitoring the roads and some of the, more well known flooding areas. The main focus is for people to understand that although it doesn’t seem like a hurricane, we’re still going to be, probably feeling some some effects in the form of higher waters.”
The county has mobilized to set up in Bayside communities; Including having first responders stage at the proper locations.
Detmer says, “We’ve moved some paramedic units to higher, higher areas. And our public safety staff and public works team has also, taken some precautionary measures. We have a close eye on it, but we need people to be cautious still.”
Over at Cambridge City Hall, officials are urging people to use caution as flooding begins to impact city streets.
…all sorts of oils, all sorts of chemicals, may be in that water. So it’s really not safe for anybody to go, you know, running through the water, as something fun to do.” says City Manager, Glenn Steckman.
Some low lying areas are already seeing flooding. Officials are saying that even a small amount can be more dangerous than you think.
“Even just just six inches of water can knock an adult over, whereas, you know, 12 inches  of water can push a car off the road. So you just want to be safe…” says Irene Barnes with the Dorchester County Council Office.
