Carroll Street will be repaved

SALISBURY, Md. — The City of Salisbury is set to begin roadwork on Carroll Street on Aug. 18. The road is known for its prominent bike lanes, which many drivers have mistaken for vehicle lanes.

City of Salisbury, Mayor Randy Taylor said, “it was really emphasized on heavy on the bike lanes. We’ve since kind of re retrenched on that subject and now we’re putting it back the way it was where narrowing up the bike lanes. And I think the community will will enjoy it.”

Jesse is a local cyclist and bike mechanic at Terry’s Bike Shop. He calls Carroll Street a main artery for the city and thinks repaving the roadway will be the right move for bikers and drivers alike.

“it’s one of the busiest intersections since people are all avoiding that business 13 and taking away really from Carol. So you’re crossing like a fair amount of traffic there of people who are avoiding the main road that makes that background as busy, if not more so than.” said Jesse.

Jesse said a typical city bike path would travel in the same direction as the cars would be traveling. “On that particular one, they have both directions of bicycle traffic on one lane, one direction in the car. And so you have to cross traffic in order to get to the bike lane.”

Mayor Randy Taylor said this will no longer be a concern for cyclists in the future.

“Be bike lanes on both sides, there will be about three or four feet, whereas before there were more circle track type of bike lanes. So that will be a major change that’ll give us room to put the actual vehicle lanes back.” said Mayor Randy Taylor.

Construction will run August 18-22nd a month before the Folk Festival, this project’s completion is a major goal for the city.

Mayor Randy Taylor added, “putting it back I think will make the public happy and I think save us a few dollars. And I think more practical and more appropriate for our community.”
