ABATE Helping Bikers Ride Safe

SALISBURY, Md. – Ken Eaton has owned this Harley Davidson motorcycle since 2007, and as Executive Director of ABATE Maryland, he’s leading a drive on the Eastern Shore to protect other bikers.
Eaton tells us, “May is Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month and organizations throughout the country try to raise awareness for motorcyclists on the roads and raise awareness for drivers to make sure they’re looking for us and that motorcyclists are actually paying attention and doing the right thing on their side. And the motorists are doing things right thing on their side.”
Todd Handy has been riding his motorcycle for over five years, and says having a group like ABATE offering up tips to keep riders safe couldn’t come at a better time.
“You know, Memorial Day is coming up and, we have to be very mindful of all of the motorcyclists. You know, we got to look twice. We got to look, make sure we check our mirrors and all of that… ” says Handy.
According to the Maryland MVA, there have already been 13 motorcycle-related deaths in 2025.
A number State Senator, Mary Beth Carozza, says she’d one day like to get down to zero.
Carozza says, “The only way we reach a goal like that is repetition, education signs doing events like this. If we have bikers in our family like I do, I’m going to make a point to you know, call my brother in law and say, I just participated in this event. You know, we’re really looking out for you all on bikes.”
