Del. State Senator Sarah McBride advances to Nov. ticket with landslide Primary win

DELAWARE – State Senator Sarah McBride advances to the November ticket for Delaware’s lone seat in the United States House of Representatives.

In Delaware’s Primary Election on Tuesday night, McBride captured 79.85% of the Democratic vote. She raked in 66,764 votes over opponents Earl Cooper’s 13,557 and Elias Weir’s 3,286 tallies respectively.

“My heart is filled with hope and gratitude for the honor and the responsibility that tens of thousands of Democratic primary votes have entrusted me with,” McBride told WMDT on Tuesday night.

Priority Issues

In the Delaware General Assembly, McBride worked to pass paid family medical leave and increase the minimum wage. She also advocated for common sense gun safety measures, as well as reproductive freedoms.

If elected to Congress, McBride says she would fight to bring down prescription drug and health care costs. She added that creating more accessibility to affordable child care and housing was another top issue. In addition, McBride says she would work to pass an assault weapons ban.

“In Congress, I will continue to prioritize all of the issues that matter to Delawareans,” McBride said. “And of course, I will stand up to MAGA extremists who want to ban abortion nationwide, and [I will] do what we’ve done here in Delaware to protect the right to choose under federal law.”

Back on the Campaign Trail

The General Election is just about eight weeks away. McBride says she is motivated to continue connecting with voters. She plans to travel around the state to speak with voters “of all political persuasions.”

McBride says she aims to carry on what she calls the legacy of “passionate and collaborative spirit” currently upheld by Delaware’s Congressional lawmakers. That’s a message she’ll be spreading to voters on the campaign trail.

“We see Delaware at its best,” McBride said. “We see leaders like [U.S. Rep.] Lisa Blunt Rochester who are willing to be bold and build bridges all at the same time.”

This is not just a campaign for blue voters, McBride says.

“It’s a campaign for Democrats, Independents, Republicans of conscience who want to turn the page on the politics of the past, and usher in a new era in our politics that brings people together, and actually meets the scope and the scale of the challenges that we face,” McBride said.

Poised to Make History

McBride is also poised to make history if she wins the election in November. She would become the first openly transgender person ever elected to Congress. However, she says she’s running not to land a spot in future textbooks, but to make a difference for Delawareans on Capitol Hill.

“Delaware voters are judging candidates based on their ideas and not on their identities,” McBride said. “I’m not running to be known for any other identity than a proud Delawarean. I’m running to be known as Delaware’s member of Congress working on all the issues that matter.”

In November, McBride will face off with Republican John Whalen III, who brought in 55.79% of the vote in Tuesday’s Delaware Primary. The Delaware Primary Election results have yet to be certified.
