Police: Bicyclist injured after swerving into car, not wearing helmet

LEWES, Del. – The Lewes Police Department says a bicyclist was injured after she swerved into a car, Saturday morning.

Officials say the accident happened around 11:45 a.m. in the 300 block of E. Savannah Road. A 61-year-old woman was reportedly riding a bicycle when she left the bike lane and hit a car that was driving next to her.

The bicyclist hit the front passenger side of the vehicle and was ejected, causing her to hit her head on the road. The victim was apparently not wearing a helmet.

Delaware State Police, as well as EMS and the Lewes Fire Department responded. The cyclist was brought to Beebe Hospital where she was stabilized and then flown to Christiana Hospital for further treatment for a “Diffuse Axonal head and brain injury”. The victim has been discharged from the hospital with follow-up care recommendations.

According to the Lewes Police Department, “The cyclist was charged with making an improper left turn, a violation of Delaware Title 21, section 4198b and for failing to utilize hand and arm signals, a violation of Delaware Title 21, section 4198A.”
