Teen driver charged in fatal Salisbury crash

 

SALISBURY, Md. – A 17-year-old has been charged in connection to a crash that claimed the life of one and critically injured another early Saturday morning.

At around 12:30 a.m., officers responded to the area of S. Salisbury Boulevard and Lloyd Street after receiving several reports of a single vehicle accident. Officers arrived at the scene to find that a vehicle had crashed into a telephone pole on the east side of S. Salisbury Boulevard, and met with the driver and one passenger, both 17-year-old males. Two other passengers, a 16-year-old male and 17-year-old male, were found outside of the vehicle in need of immediate medical assistance. Both passengers were taken to TidalHealth Peninsula Regional.

Further investigation revealed that the 17-year-old male driver was driving southbound on S. Salisbury Boulevard above the posted speed limit of 35 miles per hour. The driver reportedly failed to control the speed of the vehicle, crossed into the northbound lanes, and crashed into the telephone pole.

One of the passengers, identified as 16-year-old Carter Figgs, was pronounced dead from injuries allegedly sustained from the crash. The other passenger remains in critical but stable condition.

The driver was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and was subsequently arrested. He has been charged with numerous offenses, including criminal negligent manslaughter by vehicle, homicide by motor vehicle, DUI, driving under the influence of alcohol per se, driving while impaired by alcohol, reckless driving, negligent driving, speeding, and other related offenses. After consultation with the Department of Juvenile Services, the driver was released to the custody of his guardian.

Additionally, both Parkside and James M. Bennett High Schools have announced they will support Delmar Middle and High School and the entire Delmar community by wearing orange and blue this Thursday, October 12th.
