Tobyn’s Triumph raising awareness for Spina Bifida
DELMARVA – Mother and father Cassie and Sean Duffy are trying to raise awareness about spina bifida through their nonprofit Tobyn’s Triumph.
Spina Bifida is a birth defect that causes the spine and spinal cord not to properly develop. The Duffy’s daughter, Tobyn is now 3 years old but Cassie found out her daughter has Spina Bifida when she was 20 weeks pregnant.
Cassie says her family did the necessary research to be fully prepared to handle Tobyn’s medical needs. Adding they had 3 options: terminate the fetus, have Tobyn live her whole life in a wheelchair, or undergo a procedure.
The family chose the procedure and tell us that and researching was the best option for them to give Tobyn her best life.
“What we plan to do with the nonprofit is just to bring awareness to Delaware, basically all over just about Spina Bifida what it is and what’s possible for your child,” said Cassie Duffy, mother of Tobyn.
“Cause that child is limited mobility-wise does not mean that that child is limited or of less value cognitively, so your child can’t run skip or jump — well your child can live a healthy life cognitively and live life,” said Sean Duffy, father of Tobyn.
Cassie will be making and delivering care packages to OB and maternal-fetal medicine doctors including resources on Spina Bifida and fetal surgery, and Cassie’s own book highlighting children living with the disorder.
