Middletown 17-year-old killed in Lewes crash Friday afternoon

LEWES, Del. – Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash that happened on Friday afternoon.

Police say around 2:10 p.m., a 2012 Honda CR-V with five occupants was traveling eastbound on Lewes-Georgetown Highway (Route 9), approaching the intersection at Ebb Tide Drive. At the same time, a 2009 Ram 1500 was traveling westbound on Route 9, crossing the intersection. The driver of the Honda did not notice traffic stopped in front of the vehicle, and swerved to avoid a crash. The Ram and the Honda collided head on, causing the Honda to flip and hit a utility pole.

One of the people inside the Honda was a 17-year-old male from Middletown, who died after being taken to Beebe Hospital. Identification is pending notification of next of kin. An 18-year-old male from Bear, and a 17-year-old female from Bear were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. A 16-year-old female from Middletown, and a 17-year old male from Middletown were taken to the hospital in critical condition. The driver of the Honda has not yet been confirmed.

The 77-year-old man driving the Ram was released from an area hospital with minor injuries. Meanwhile, the roadway was closed for about three hours as the investigation got underway. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact Corporal Smith at (302) 703-3267.
