July is UV Safety Awareness Month

DELMARVA-  As July is UV safety awareness month, health professionals give their advice on how to prevent skin cancer, premature aging, and eye damage.
Kelly Shockley is the Supervisor for the Cancer Screening Program at Worcester County Health Department.
“Protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays should be a priority all year, not just during the summer season.” Said Shockley. “Using a broad spectrum sunscreen that has a SPF of 30 or greater, reapplying regularly especially if outside for more than 2 hours or in the water, wearing protective clothing such as a wide brim hat, long sleeves, sunglasses, and finding shade when the sun’s rays are the strongest from 10am-2pm, are all important steps in protecting your skin from UV rays.”
Shockley also explains that it is important to look out for the warning signs of skin cancer.
“Performing a monthly self skin check and making your care provider aware of any changes or areas of concern is also an important preventative step in preventing skin cancer.” Said Shockley.
Barbara Nazelrod is a nurse practitioner at Tidal Health’s Skin Cancer Clinic, and gives advice for recognising potential skin cancer spots.
“A stands for asymmetry.” Said Nazelrod. “If you have a spot on your skin that isn’t consistently one shape, it’s irregularly shaped”
If you notice a spot that is irregular or concerning, it is advised to visit a dermatologist.
