Heat Wave Prompts Health Department Partners to Hand Out Supplies

(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – As the worst of the heat wave continues to grip our area. The Dorchester County Health Department is working to get supplies to people to help them beat the heat. And they’re doing it through the help of community partners, like One Mission in Cambridge.

The Health Department is giving away dozens of bags with supplies. Including bottled water, sun block, and a handheld fan to name a few.

And they’re getting help from the Cambridge Police Department to go around the community and get these bags to people struggling with triple digit heat.

Cambridge Police Chief Justin Todd tells WMDT, “The health department was generous enough to, supply these cooling packs for us to be able to help our citizens. And the ones who are in need that are can be in dangerous situations. Out, in, out, in these, bad temperatures.”

This is addition to a number cooling centers across Dorchester County open to the public. Including One Mission, where several people already got their hands on some of these cooldown packs. And it’s been the difference maker.

“I was overheating. That’s why. I mean, like, this cool down here to cool me down a little bit. So it’s very important to have these out here because people get overheated and pass out. And that’s not really good,” says Arrionna Sherwood of St. Michaels.

While the worst of the extreme heat is still on the way, people are looking anywhere to help cool off, and avoid an emergency.

George Thomas of Cambridge says, “I think it’s I think it’s very important because with the heat index coming up to 115, it would be very important.”

While Alvonte Conyer of Cambridge tells us, “You don’t want like nobody to catch like heat stroke or anything and fall out and all that because this heat is like, no joke.”
