OC Fire fighters on how to stay safe during Fourth of July heat wave
Ocean City, Md. – Fourth of July celebrations in Ocean City are underway, but so is record breaking heat. For the fire fighters in Ocean City, keeping cool and hydrated is essential as they respond to fires in record-high temperatures during one of the busiest times in the season.
“We’re excited to spend the 250th, celebration of America here in Ocean City. Some great firework shows. Unfortunately, we have a little bit of extreme heat that’s coming our way. And so we have to be prepared for that,” Ocean City Fire Department Community and Department Engagement Officer Ryan Whittington said.
To do that, Whittington says, the department is coordinating with the town’s Emergency Management department, to have cooling stations, cooling chairs and misting fans for themselves and victims who may need some rapid cooling. He says hydration is paramount, making sure that folks drink water all day and take electrolytes well before they become thirsty.
“What we see a lot of times when people come to the beach is they’re in the sun for hours or they want to get the best seat for the fireworks show,” he said.
Whittington said it’s important to wear light colored clothing as well as lighter fabrics, find shade, find places with AC or the nearest cooling station. He also cautioned against leaving children and pets unattended in cars even for minutes at a time. Worcester County is also still in a burn ban and, to avoid any fires erupting, folks are prohibited from setting off their own fireworks, only handheld sparklers are allowed.
“Leave them to the professionals. We’re going to have a wonderful show celebrating the 250th birthday of our wonderful country, and you’re going to have quite a few professional shows to enjoy,” Deputy Fire Chief Derrick Simpson said. “Leave the fireworks to the professionals.”
OCFD officials say there is a new cooling station opening on Northside Park Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. For a complete list of cooling stations across Delmarva, visit here.
