Fourth of July brings heavy crowds, increased emergency responses across Maryland

MARYLAND — Maryland agencies are reviewing the impact of one of the state’s busiest holiday weekends as Independence Day celebrations brought increased travel, packed beaches and a surge in emergency responses.

The Maryland State Police are expected to release final holiday enforcement statistics detailing crashes, traffic fatalities, impaired driving arrests and citations issued during the Fourth of July holiday period.

Thousands of visitors traveled to Ocean City and other popular destinations along Maryland’s Eastern Shore throughout the weekend, creating heavy traffic and filling hotels, restaurants and beaches.

Officials say local businesses benefited from strong tourism as visitors celebrated the holiday with beach activities, fireworks displays and community events.

Emergency rooms across Maryland also treated patients for heat-related illnesses and fireworks injuries. Physicians continue urging families to attend professional fireworks displays rather than using consumer fireworks at home, citing the risk of burns, eye injuries and hand trauma.

Fire departments throughout the state remained busy responding to grass fires, dumpster fires, structure fires and medical emergencies associated with holiday celebrations and hot weather conditions.

Officials are also reviewing the number of emergency calls received over the holiday weekend compared to previous years to better understand staffing needs during major holiday events.

Meteorologists say high temperatures and humidity also increased the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, particularly among people spending extended periods outdoors.

State officials continue encouraging drivers to plan ahead, designate sober drivers and remain alert as summer travel continues.
