Delaware agencies report busy Fourth of July weekend as officials compile holiday numbers

DOVER, Del. — Delaware officials are wrapping up one of the busiest travel weekends of the summer as thousands of residents and visitors celebrated Independence Day across the First State.

From packed beaches along the Delaware coast to increased traffic on major highways, law enforcement agencies, firefighters and emergency responders experienced a busy Fourth of July holiday weekend.

The Delaware State Police are expected to release final enforcement numbers, including the number of crashes, traffic fatalities, DUI arrests and traffic citations issued during the holiday enforcement period. Last year, officials investigated hundreds of crashes and urged drivers to slow down, buckle up and never drive impaired.

Travel also remained heavy throughout the holiday weekend as thousands of visitors headed to Rehoboth Beach, Lewes, Bethany Beach and other coastal communities. According to AAA, more than 209,000 Delawareans were expected to travel during the Independence Day holiday, with most traveling by vehicle.

Emergency departments across the state also treated patients suffering from heat-related illnesses and fireworks injuries. Medical professionals continue reminding residents to leave fireworks to trained professionals, noting burns and eye injuries remain among the most common holiday-related injuries.

The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office is also expected to release information regarding illegal fireworks complaints, investigations and seizures following the holiday weekend.

Fire departments across Delaware responded to numerous emergency calls during the weekend, including grass fires, brush fires, structure fires and medical emergencies. Officials are comparing this year’s call volume to last year’s holiday period while recognizing the dedication of career and volunteer firefighters who remained on duty throughout the celebrations.

Businesses in Delaware’s beach communities also experienced one of their busiest weekends of the year as restaurants, hotels and retail stores welcomed large crowds throughout the holiday.

State officials continue encouraging residents to celebrate responsibly by staying hydrated during periods of extreme heat, wearing seat belts and avoiding impaired driving.
