REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. – The Rehoboth Beach Police Department is preparing for another unsanctioned “Takeover” event coming to the Boardwalk.

On Tuesday, Jun. 23, police became aware of the promotion of the event planned within the city. A similar event recently occurred on May 19, in which large groups of people gathered on the beach and Boardwalk late into the evening, prompting some businesses to close early.

In response to this anticipated gathering, the department says the public should expect an increased law enforcement presence throughout the city, including a “coordinated multi-jurisdictional response and the deployment of specialized resources to maintain public safety.” Further, police say there will be an enhanced focus on enforcement related to drug and alcohol violations, disorderly conduct, littering, loud music and noise disturbances, trespassing, and traffic violations.

In connection with last month’s Takeover event, Rehoboth Police filed charges against four students at Delaware State University, taking three into custody. However, on May 29, Delaware Department of Justice announced they would be dismissing the charges due to a lack of evidence substantiating the claims. Yet, the City of Rehoboth Beach says they were never contacted in regards to the dismissal of charges and disagreed with the decision, saying in part, “it does not appear that all relevant facts and circumstances have yet been fully reviewed.”

Still, police advise event organizers and promoters that unlawful gatherings, disruptive behavior, and activities that threaten public safety will not be tolerated.
