Seaford moves to 5-0 for the first time in 22 years with win over Delmar
DELMAR, Del.- After taking their first lead midway through the third quarter, the Seaford Blue Jays held on to defeat Delmar 49-44. With the win, Seaford moves to 5-0 for the first time since 1997 when they won the state title over Newark. The loss drops Delmar to 3-2.
Coming off a tough loss to Delmarva Christian, Delmar started out hot jumping out to a 10-3 lead to end the first quarter. The Blue Jays off to a slow start missing a lot of open shots in the first. In the second quarter, Seaford started to get in a groove putting up eleven points to cut the lead to five, 19-14 headed into the break. Amir Mollock hit two clutch threes to start the Blue Jays run. Zach Covington led the Wildcats with 5 points.
In the second half, Seaford took control of the game. Behind seven third quarter points from Tyrese Fortune, the Blue Jays tied the game up at 24 with four minutes left in the third. In the final two minutes of the third, the teams would trade lead changes and as the quarter expired and the game tied at 30, Brent Ricketts knocked down a deep three to give Seaford the 33-30 lead headed into the fourth.
In the fourth, the number one team in the Henlopen South began to pull away. Behind eleven points from Ricketts and Fortune the Blue Jays jumped out to a ten point lead late in the quarter. Delmar not giving up that easily at home, would cut the lead to just three with a TJ Gibson three and lay up with under a minute to play. Despite four turnovers in the final minute of the game, Seaford held on to remain undefeated with the 49-44 win over Delmar.
The Blue Jays return to action after the Christmas break in the Quaker Classic January 3rd. Delmar will look to get back in the win column when they compete in the Governors Challenge.
