Hogan extends deadline for homeowners’, renters’ property tax credit programs

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Homeowners and renters in Maryland will now have an extra month to file for two tax credit programs that could provide some much-needed relief. Recently, Governor Larry Hogan announced that Marylanders now have until October 31st to apply for the 2020 Homeowners’ and Renters’ Property Tax Credits program. Hogan says those who apply for the homeowners’ program will be able to set a limit on the amount of property taxes they owe based on their income. And if they’ve already paid their property tax before the deadline, any tax credit that the homeowner may be eligible for will be refunded.
Meanwhile, those who pay high monthly rent and do not receive assistance from the federal government or state can receive credit issued in the form of a direct check payment of up to $1,000.

“With this extension and making people aware of it to put their application in, then I think it’s going to put us in a much better place financially. It’s going to help those individuals that need that assistance,” said Delegate Sheree Sample-Hughes (D-District 37A).

In a statement regarding the deadline extension, Governor Larry Hogan said, “This is yet another step our administration is taking to ensure more of our citizens can remain safe and secure in their homes.” State officials added that these credits will be forgiven and not deferred.
