MDOT Proclaims May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month
(SALISBURY, Md) – As the weather starts to warm up, it means plenty of people are hitting the road, especially on their motorcycles.
So the Maryland Department of Transportation is partnering with motorcyclist advocacy group, ABATE Maryland, to launch Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.
The campaign is reminding bikers and driver that they need to share the road.
Motorcycle Safety Awareness month has helped in the past couple of years with reducing the number of motorcycle related deaths on the Eastern Shore, with a substantial drop off from 2024 to 2025.
But MDOT wants to get to a point where that number goes down to zero beyond the shore.
“Yeah, we’ve seen approximately 50% reduction in motorcycle fatalities, which is wonderful progress, but we’ll only celebrate when we truly reach zero fatalities. I am tentatively excited to say that as of now, we have zero motorcycle fatalities here on the shore,” says MDOT Administrator, Chrissy Nizer.
The number of motorcycle related deaths on the Eastern Shore dropped from 12 in 2024, to five in 2025.
