The Missing Element and Beat Box House Show
SALISBURY, Md – Salisbury University is holding a free event to the public on April 22nd at 7:30pm at Holloway Hall.
On April 21st, The Missing Element and Beat-box House performed a pop up show in the Commons dining hall as a preview to full show happening at Holloway Hall.
The group was first formed in New York City and consists of five beat boxers and five dancers. They tour all over to Universities, immersing students in their different styles and disciplines. Michael Wingate, or Match, who’s a Seaford native, got his beat-boxing start through a capella music and met his colleagues through competitive beat-boxing.
“You probably have seen dancing and like, dance companies or like on some sort of reality show.” Match said. “Same thing with beat-boxing, but combined into a full show. You probably haven’t seen anything like this.”
Co-Choreographer of The Missing Element, Twice Light, has been dancing for 25 years. He joined the group because he’s always had a passion in dancing and music. This group has brought a sense of togetherness for him.
“People forget the missing element of hip hop is actually beat-boxing,” Twice Light said. “So, people get lost in dance culture and, you know, MCing and rapping and fashion and graffiti as well. They always forget about beat-boxing, which is very important to know that that is a part of the culture of hip hop, and that is all about togetherness.”
There is also a competitive beat-boxing community in the DMV that organizes local meetups and beat-box battles for anyone to attend. The Missing Element has future events as well. They will be performing at UMD on April 25th. To get tickets for the event on April 22nd, visit salisbury.edu/performingarts.
