MILLSBORO, Del. — Firefighters responded Saturday evening to a brush fire along John J. Williams Highway after what officials say began as a controlled burn spread beyond its intended area.

The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched around 5:34 p.m. on Feb. 14, 2026, to the 27100 block of John J. Williams Highway near Indian Summer Village following reports of a backyard fire extending into nearby trees and a firewood pile.

Responding units included Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard station, along with Brush 80, Engine 80 and Command 80 from the Long Neck facility. Delaware State Fire Police also assisted with traffic control in the area.

Crews worked to contain and extinguish the fire using Class A foam and water while establishing a stable water supply. Firefighters also conducted overhaul operations and wet down efforts to prevent flare-ups.

According to officials, the fire appears to have started when residents conducting a controlled burn lost control of the flames, causing the fire to spread into the backyard. Fire personnel advised residents on proper burning procedures before clearing the scene and returning to their stations.

No injuries were reported, and the incident remains under investigation.
