Wi-Hi boy’s basketball completes regular-season sweep of Pocomoke, reclaims top spot in Bayside South

POCOMOKE CITY. Md. – Wi-Hi boy’s basketball put away Pocomoke 71-56 Friday night in Pocomoke City, beating the Warriors for the second time this season in a game with major implications at the top of the Bayside South.

The Tribe started quicker than the Warriors, working for an 11-5 lead midway through the first quarter. Pocomoke closed the period effectively, though, trailing by just two points at 16-14 heading into the second.

The teams battled to nearly a draw in the second quarter, with the Warriors cutting the two-point deficit in half for 29-28 Wi-Hi advantage at the break.

The second half initially looked like it would bring more of the tight, blow-for-blow basketball that the first two quarters saw, with a three-pointer from Pocomoke’s Michael Ames (9 points) tying the game at 35 with about 5 minutes to play in the quarter. From that point, Wi-Hi seemingly found the key to breaking Pocomoke’s press, taking advantage of transition opportunities that sparked a 12-2 run, ultimately carrying a 53-41 lead into the fourth quarter.

Led offensively by the trio of Tyson Hayward (19 points), Tay’Shaun Swann (16 points), and Vic Collins (15 points), Wi-Hi closed out the game with ease, claiming a victory in the team’s first game back since an upset loss at the hands of the Washington Jaguars on January 23rd. Friday’s win marked the Tribe’s second over Pocomoke this season. The head-to-head record could prove crucial as a tie-breaker in the Bayside South, with both teams sporting 9-2 conference records entering the final stretch of the regular season.
