Habitat for Humanity Awarded $165,000 in Revitalization Grants

WICOMICO CO. Md. — Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County has announced the receipt of two grants from The Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development.

The funding comes from DHCD’s State Revitalization programs. Both grants total $165,000 and will support Habitat’s efforts to support low-income families in Wicomico County.

$65,000 will fund water and sewer infrastructure for Habitat’s newest home build on Christopher Street in Salisbury. $100,000 will be used as downpayment assistance subsidies for Habitat homebuyers in Wicomico and Somerset counties.

“In this part of the City of Salisbury, believe it or not, there is no access to sewer and water, so even though we are a nonprofit developer, we are required to make that investment and the cost of that is about $100,000,” CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County Molly Hilligoss said.

Hilligoss says the funding will help low-income families overcome key hurdles to affordable homeownership by reducing upfront costs.

“We are here as a nonprofit partner to help families become homeowners… We would like folks to apply so we can help them achieve the dream of homeownership and build generational wealth.”

Eastern shore communities have received over 6 million dollars through the state’s revitalization programs, promoting community development and economic growth here on Delmarva. For more information, you can visit Habitat for Humanity’s website at www.wicomicohabitat.org.
