Three Milford families celebrate new beginnings

MILFORD, Del. — Three Milford families are celebrating new beginnings this holiday season after Sussex County Habitat for Humanity built three newly completed homes on McColley Street.

The homes are part of a broader effort to expand affordable housing in downtown Milford, where rising costs have made homeownership increasingly difficult for many residents. Habitat leaders say the development will ultimately create nine homeownership opportunities for families who might otherwise be unable to compete in today’s housing market.

For the new homeowners, the project represents more than a place to live.

“It gives me joy and honor for low-income people,” one homeowner said. “It’s so amazing, and I’m so grateful for the grant and the community.”

Another resident said the stability offered by the program is what matters most.

“I’m looking forward to just having a safe space and just grow here and see how the community is right here in Milford,” the homeowner said.

Kevin Gilmore, CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Sussex County, said the timing of the move-ins adds to the significance of the project.

“Three families getting ready to move into houses around this time of Christmas,” Gilmore said. “We think about celebration and the opportunity of having a house — a warm place to call home.”

Local leaders praised the initiative, calling it vital for Milford and the wider region. Mayor Todd Culotta said programs like Habitat’s help strengthen communities by providing affordable paths to homeownership.

“This is a really important program that we have here in Milford,” Culotta said. “It helps people move into homes and gives home affordability and homeownership.”

Culotta also pointed to Milford’s community-focused atmosphere as a draw for new residents.

“Milford is a great place to come and live — a great community-minded place,” he said. “Everybody knows everybody, and we’re growing.”

Habitat for Humanity leaders said the homes were made possible through community partnerships and volunteer efforts. They hope to continue building additional houses in Milford in the coming years, expanding access to affordable housing for more families across Sussex County.
