Laurel out-duels Delmar for Henlopen South road win
DELMAR. Del. – Laurel boy’s basketball beat Delmar 52-49 on Thursday night in Delmar.
It was a slow start to the game for both offenses, with Delmar leading 10-5 after the first quarter. In the second stanza both teams picked up their shotmaking, with Laurel getting a spark from Khalid Burton in the form of 10 second-quarter points for a 24-23 lead at the break.
The lead changed hands multiple times in the second half. The Wildcats led 35-34 with 6:28 left in the game, but an 8-2 run from the Bulldogs over the next 1:26 of game time put Laurel up 42-37, an advantage they would hold onto for the rest of the game.
Laurel was led offensively by Burton’s 24-point night, with 14 points from Za-Bryan Eley and and 12 from Buggy Thompson.
After the game, Laurel head coach Joseph Wenke said, “That’s the kind of game we like to play. We like to move fast, we like to go to the basket–and they slowed us down a little bit–but we fought through it. I thought going through adversity, especially early in the season is a great thing for us.”
The Bulldogs move to 3-1 with the win. Laurel’s next game is at home on Tuesday, December 16, at 6:30 p.m. against Seaford.
Delmar falls to 2-1 with the loss. The Wildcats’ next game is on Tuesday, December 16, at 6:30 p.m. on the road at Woodbridge.
