A flock of seagulls move in for the school year

SALISBURY, Md. — Suitcases lined the sidewalks at Salisbury University on Friday as the newest Seagulls moved onto campus for the fall semester.

Alexa Rawling, academic program specialist with the Institute of Public Affairs and Civic Engagement, said move-in day is always emotional for both students and families.

“I like seeing all the smiling faces, and even some of the families are a little scared and a little sad,” Rawling said. “But I reassure them that they’ll be fine here, they’ll be well taken care of.”

Students from campus clubs, Greek life and athletics pitched in to help the Class of 2029 move into residence halls.

Junior swimmer, diver and tour guide Sadie Hebert said one move-in moment was especially meaningful.

“I moved in a girl who is living in the room I lived in here in Severn, and I was actually her tour guide when she came to visit,” Hebert said. “She told me, ‘You were a great tour guide, and you’re the reason we decided to come.’ That was super special.”

Freshman Jenna O’Connor said she knew right away that Salisbury was the right fit.

“About halfway through the tour, I went out to my parents during a break and said, ‘I’m going here,’” she said.

Her mother admitted it was bittersweet to say goodbye.

“It’s going to be a big loss for us. I’ll miss her a ton,” she said. “But it was an easy decision, because it was such an easy decision for Jenna.”

Fellow freshman Chelsea June said leaving her parents was the hardest part.

“Having to say bye to my parents was kind of stressful, but it also felt relieving to finally be here after waiting so long for this day,” she said.

Returning students brought energy and support to welcome the new class.

“It was nice to see the whole community come out, meet some of my fellow Gulls and help out,” said basketball player Jalen Shipping.
