Law enforcement leaders gather at the Wicomico Civic Center for public forum

SALISBURY, Md. – Local law enforcement gathered at the Wicomico Civic Center to discuss their most pressing issues. Many officials spoke about the strengths and challenges they currently face in the community.

Sheriff Matthew Crisafulli said he hopes community members understand that being an officer is no simple task.

“They’re not going to be perfect. They are not robots. They are under more scrutiny now than we have ever been.”

The Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce organized the event. Chamber President Bill Chambers said the event is a chance for leaders to collaborate.

“The interesting thing about these law enforcement leaders is how much they do work together across jurisdictional and state lines,” he said. “It’s something that you think isn’t happening, but it is very real.”

Public perception, recruitment and competitive salaries topped the list of topics discussed.

Salisbury Police Chief David Meienschein said he wants better funding for police agencies across the state.

“It’s working on the numbers and what works budget wise, maintaining competitive salaries,” he said. “I always like to say we don’t need to be the top person or top agency, but just keep us in the race.”

He added that it’s important to stay transparent with the community and said he hopes his department can continue to build relationships with residents.

“Sometimes it’s just a matter of not understanding how we operate by law, the communication, or the transparency of our actions,” he said.
