Worcester County officials want residents to voice their opinions in new housing study
WORCESTER COUNTY, Md. – County officials are gearing up for a housing study, and hope community members get involved. The county is pushing for residents to fill out the survey, voice their views, and observe the most pressing housing issues facing the county.
Development Review and Permitting Director, Jennifer Keener, said this study will give the county answers.
“The survey will consist of 22 questions, and it’ll address current housing needs. It’ll ask about future housing needs, as well as availability.”
Through May 31st, the survey will be online. This is the first study done since 2004. The update will allow county officials to determine the needs and challenges of the county. The hope is to analyze current demographics, local economy, and housing market trends. Keener urges residents to take the time to answer it.
“Whether they’re in a municipality or low-income, we want to hear from them. We want to know what their needs are and what they see in our community.”
According to the county, 32% of homeowners and 54% of renters are housing-burdened. This means housing costs take up over 30% of a household’s income. Keener states this new study will consider those issues.
“The final report will be out by fall, and it will identify potential code amendments or policy suggestions that we can make. It will also provide more affordable housing, and identify potential funding sources for that.”
