Clay Conaway rape trial: Day 3
SUSSEX CO., Del. – The testimony heard Wednesday in Sussex County court will play a major role in the jury’s decision regarding Clay Conaway’s fate. Conaway’s accuser was on the stand all day, describing the events of June 20, the day she says she was raped as Conaway listened to her give her side of the story.
She read dozens of messages between her and her friends out loud, creating a timeline of events before and after the reported rape. The state presented evidence including countless text messages, screenshots, phone call records and even photos of the inside of the defendant’s home.
The alleged victim was seen nervously shaking as she starting talking about the incident in question. She says she went over to Conaway’s Georgetown home, June 20, 2018 and they kissed. But things escalated and he allegedly forced himself onto her. According to her, she told him “no” and he said, “It’s fine we’re just messing around”. But his accuser felt Conaway was too strong and she couldn’t get out of the situation so she froze.
She was soft spoken and avoided eye contact with Conaway. Until the end of the state’s questioning when they asked her to directly point at and identify her alleged assailant in open court. She pointed at Conaway, sitting about 15 feet away, and said “He’s right there in a blue suit”.
The state hoped all of this would help the jury get a better idea of the circumstances surrounding the allegations.
The defense began cross examination of Conway’s accuser around 3 p.m. but their time was cut short and will continue on Thursday.
Joe Hurley, Conaway’s defense attorney, spoke to 47 ABC about what’s expected on the docket for Thursday, “The person that has special training in dealing with people who are allegedly victims of sex crimes and she will be giving testimony as to her findings and what was reported to her in the hours after the events took place, whatever they were.”
Cross examination is expected to continue Thursday morning at 9:30. Clay Conaway is set to testify at some point during this trial.
The state also plans to bring up a forensic analyst, the Delaware State Police detective in charge of the case and another friend of Conaway’s accuser.
In addition to this case, Conaway is also facing charges for allegedly assaulting five other women over the course of five years. He has pleaded not guilty to the almost ten charges against him.
