Matt Meyer sworn in as Del. 76th Gov.
DOVER, Del. – With son, Levi, in arms, Matt Meyer was sworn in as Delaware’s 76th governor, during an otherwise unconventional inauguration ceremony.
The swearing in was moved indoors to the William B. DeLauder Education and Humanities Theatre at Delaware State University, due to the cold, making it the first inauguration in the nation’s history to be held at an HBCU.
“I took an oath of office for this journey to be about all of us, about you and about us doing better by our kids, doing better by all of our friends and neighbors,” said Gov. Meyer.
Gov. Meyer laid out his 4-year plan to address housing disparities in the state, mend the health care system and put a special emphasis on public education.
The Gov. wasted no time, signing his first executive order to create more youth apprenticeships in education.
“As a teacher and as a governor, I refuse to write off any of our children, not one of them, because I’ve seen what they can do when they’re given a chance,” said Gov. Meyer.
Meanwhile, Kyle Evans Gay took her oath as Lieutenant Governor, committing to steer the people of Delaware out of political division and toward solutions.
“The stakes are perhaps higher than they have ever been, and for many of us, the work is more personal than it has ever been,” Lt. Gov. Gay said. “The politics of today have created deep divides between elected officials, community leaders and even families.”
Looking ahead, Gov. Meyer said he has big plans for the small state.
“I want to take advantage of our smallness, to create true greatness,” said Gov. Meyer. “I want us to be a model for what any state can achieve, at a time when nearly half our country is turning on a tv and then turning it off, wondering what future there is for America.”
