Coffee prices aren’t rising in Salisbury despite inflation
Cost of Coffee
Salisbury, Md. – With the price of goods rising, some people are wondering should we be concerned about the cost of coffee.
Consumption
In the United States, a staggering 220 million Americans include coffee in their daily routine. Recent reports show coffee prices are the highest they’ve been in the past 47 years. Now the question is does that affect The Eastern Shore?
Chickaree Coffee
P.J.’s coffee of New Orleans has settled in Salisbury. Owner Rob Beckey, says since opening in October, they’ve had a great response from the community and don’t foresee any problems. “Coffee is enjoyed by many, many, people, the majority of people in fact… The buying that they do has already occurred. So, prices tend to moderate, because of the time at which they buy the coffee. So, if they bought it 6 months ago, we wouldn’t see any increase or decrease in prices.”
Beckey says in order to ensure success, they did some research before bringing the south to the shore. “We all went to New Orleans for a week and enjoyed the hospitality, and the food culture and learned how to make coffee… Chickaree Coffee which we serve, is certainly a southern treat. Beignets, very much a southern treat.”
Consistent Customers
Chitra Sari of Izza Poke & Coffee opened 2 years ago, and gets her blends from a roaster in College Park, Maryland. She says her prices aren’t affected. “We haven’t seen any price change, or whatever, but I don’t know, maybe next year? Until this time, the price is still the same from the supplier… Compared to last year, this year is a significant improvement. In terms of the customers, seeing Salisbury growing right now, so I think this year is well improved.”
Sari says as an Indonesian, she loves strong coffee, something her customers gravitate towards. “My coffee is house blend, from 3 single origin beans. Utopian beans, Sumatra- Indonesian, and Brazil… To me, I’m worried about the people buying, the power of people buying, because that may make a very big impact for us… My challenge is how to make local people know us better, because when the students aren’t here, it’s a little impact for me.”
“Coffee Community”
At P. J.’s Beckey says he’s happy to be a part of the shore’s coffee community. “The market share is large here. There’s a number of competitions in places. Our hope is to add to the market, not to take away from anyone.”
